CHAPTER

SEVENTEEN

DINNER FOR TWO

Hudson rummaged around in his rucksack, searching for the food pouches that had somehow worked their way to the very bottom of the bag. Driving his arm deeper into the pack, he fished around and finally managed to wrap his fingers around the pouches before pulling them out.

“It looks like tonight’s culinary delights are sausage and beans or chicken stew,” Hudson said, reading the labels of the self-heating pouches. “Though I doubt there’s any real sausage or chicken to be found in there.”

“There’s not much of anything real in those food pouches, but they’ll do,” Tory said. She offered Hudson her flask. “This is the genuine article though.”

Hudson accepted the flask and drank deeply from it. Neither of them had taken a nanoliver pill, but since they’d gone a full thirty-six hours without so much as a blip of movement on their watches, he felt safe enough to lower his guard, at least for a time.

“Are you cooking tonight, or is it me?” Hudson asked, pretending that they were simply on a wild campaign vacation, rather than hiding from people who wanted them dead.

“I’ll do it; your cooking is terrible,” Tory said, picking up both pouches and squeezing the corners to activate the self-heating systems. “I’m having the stew, by the way.”

Hudson scowled. “Who made you the arbiter of my dinner choices?”

“It was two people, actually,” Tory replied. She then tapped her Schofield revolver, which was on the bedding mat by the side of her pack. “You might have heard of them before. They’re called Smith and Wesson…”

Hudson held up his hands in surrender. “Fine, I’ll take the sausage and beans. Just don’t shoot.”

Tory laughed and Hudson closed his eyes and soaked in the sound; it was something he rarely got to hear. He then checked his watch, while the pouches heated their food for the night, but the movement indicator was still clear.

“I think we’re okay for another twelve hours at least,” Tory said, shuffling position to get more comfortable. “They’ll find us eventually, but for now, you can relax.”

Hudson also tried to get comfortable, but as was often the case in the aftermath of the many fights they managed to get involved in, the aches and pains of injuries old and new returned with a vengeance.

“I don’t suppose you managed to pack one of Scarlett’s Doc Bots, by any chance?” he said, wincing as he accidently knocked an old bullet wound that was still healing.

“We’ll have to make do with the emergency medical supplies, until it’s safe enough for us to visit a med center.” Tory offered Hudson the flask again. “But if you need something for the pain…”

Hudson waved her off. “If I drink too much of that, I’ll end up falling off this little campsite we discovered.” He glanced over the side of the ledge where they’d set up camp and into the void. “It’s probably two hundred meters straight down from here.”

Tory set down the flask of whiskey then collected a med kit and shuffled closer to Hudson.
